EAcrystal is an ruggedized and waterproofed Bluetooth transmitter designed for continuous use with a Thermo/ Foxboro TVA1000B. While the device is not Certified Intrinsically Safe by FM or UL, it utilizes the Energy Limitation* power system of the TVA. EACrystal is also fully epoxy encased making contact with explosive mixtures impossible.

*Energy Limitation for the purpose of intrinsic safety is defined as, low voltage output incapable of causing ignition.

The TVA uses a resistor to limit the electrical current and at least two diodes in combination with a fuse to limit voltage. The resistor limits the electrical current to a specific value known as the short-circuit current. The Zener diodes limit the voltage to a value referred to as the open circuit voltage. The fuse will blow when the diode conducts. This interrupts the circuit, preventing the diode from burning, which could allow excess voltage to reach the hazardous area. There are, at all times, at least two Zener diodes parallel with the other in each intrinsically safe barrier. If one diode fails, the other acts as a backup providing safe operation and complete protection. In this way, the instrument can be certified as intrinsically safe in both working and failure modes. This redundant power protection also protects the EACrystal.
